MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (STUDIO OF)
Two Boys Wrestling<>.

Pen and brown ink on thin, early cream laid paper with narrow chain lines. 152x85 mm; 6x3 3/8 inches (irregular sheet edges). With studies of a leg, a horse and drapery in pen and ink, verso.

The subject of the current work compares with a different group of wrestling putti by Raimondi in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York; similar angular contours are evident on the legs of Romulus and Remus in Raimondi's drawing in the Uffizi of the Roman She-Wolf of circa 1500. The style of parallel lines and cross-hatching used to model the bodies, the densely shaded background seen in his more finished drawings and the rather abstract shapes of the figures are characteristics of the earliest drawings by the Bolognese printmaker.
