MARCEL DUCHAMP
Contrepetrie record album from the S.M.S. Portfolio.

45 rpm record attached to paper, 1968. 280x180x30 mm; 11x7x1 inches. Edition of approximately 2000. Published by Letter Edged in Black Press, Inc., New York. From S.M.S. Portfolio.

Duchamp (1887-1968) contributed a seven-minute recording of himself reading transposed letters, words and syllables, to the cutting-edge portfolio S.M.S. (short for "Shit Must Stop"), from the press founded by artists William Copley (1919-1996) and Dimitri "Pete" Petrov (1919-1986). The record can be removed and played. This work was one of Duchamp's last pieces. He died shortly after his S.M.S. contribution. This piece is directly related to earlier recordings and record-shaped artworks made by the famous Dadaist, Surrealist and father of conceptual art.
