MARCEL GROMAIRE
Femme nue.

Pen and ink on paper, 1957. 253x335 mm; 9 7/8x13 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto.

Ex-collection Galerie J. Le Chapelin, with the gallery label on the frame back; private collection, New York; thence by descent.

Gromaire's (1892-1971) stylized figural works are indebted to one of the influences of Félix Vallotton, one of his teachers of the Académie Ransan in Paris, and the printmaker Jean-Émil Laboureur (see lots 129-132) with whom he had a close friendship. After serving in World War I (he was wounded in the Battle of the Somme, 1916), Gromaire returned to Paris and developed a deep interest in motion pictures. His drawings and paintings from the 1920s onward resemble the still photographs taken on the set of the classic Art Deco movies of the times.
