MARCELLIN AUZOLLE (1862-1942) QUINQUINA BAILLY. 1899.
116x42 inches. P. Vercasson, Paris.
Condition B+: minor paper loss and repaired tears in margins; staining in bottom margin; creases in image. Two sheets.
Auzolle's claim to fame is that he designed the very first cinema poster, for the Lumiere brothers in 1896. He was a prolific commercial artist working actively for bicycles, cars and various brands of liqueurs. Quinquina Bailly was one of many liqueur producers in the Doubs region of the Jura mountains. Auzolle has designed an elongated poster based on Mucha's principle of a woman sitting within a halo with long hair and an extravagant costume. The image was drawn on the lithographic stone by Gallice, a skillful lithographer who specialized in this job for artists who did not have the time or the know-how to do it themselves.
