MARCELLO DUDOVICH (1878-1962)

SALUTIS SOAP / CHIOZZA E TURCHI. Circa 1900.

79 1/4x37 1/4 inches, 201 1/4x94 1/2 cm. Dott. Chappuis, Bologna.
Condition B+: darkening and bleach spots in margins; repaired tears, minor creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; offsetting in central image and text; ink and paper stamps. Two-sheets, slightly misaligned. Mounted on paper.

An advertisement for soap, in which a young lady is bathed in a wash tub by her governess. The steam from her bath rises in sinuous, decorative wafts of vapor to form the shape of lilacs, from which the product draws its scent. This is the first edition of the poster, which was censored and withdrawn from circulation due to the overtly immodest nature of the young woman bathing. In the subsequent edition she is depicted wearing a black negligee. Rare. We could find no other copies at auction.
