MARGARET BURROUGHS (1917 - 2010)
Emma Lazarus.

Linoleum cut on smooth cream paper, 1963. 305x203 mm; 12x8 inches, full margins. Second edition (of 2). Signed, titled, dated and numbered 4/5 in ink, lower margin.

Burroughs' portrait of poet Emma Lazarus depicts the writer of "The New Colossus," whose words appear on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. While Lazarus, a Jewish New Yorker, passed away decades before Burroughs was born, she was obviously inspired by the poet's lasting words of "A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles."
