MARGARETHE FRIEDLANDER MANTHEY. Circa 1911.
273/4x363/4 inches. Ernst Marx, Berlin.
Condition B+: replaced paper, repaired tears and paper skinning in top and bottom margins.
This is the only poster known to be designed by this female artist. The image, using only flat tones and no outlining, is a subtle and soft, elaborate rendering of a woman playing the piano. The image is small, as though we were watching her on stage. In contrast, the typography is large, but elegant, and does not disturb the classy atmosphere of the piece. A Berlin-based company, Ferdinand Manthey began producing pianos in 1868 and the company ceased production in 1986. DFP-III 938.
