Marie Johnson-Calloway is a California artist and professor known for her use of collage and mixed-media in large, constructed assemblages of everyday African Americans. Many scenes are recreated memories from her childhood growing up in Maryland. In 1969, she became an assistant professor at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and San Jose State University. From 1973 to 1983, she was an associate professor in the art department of San Francisco State University. Her work is found in the permanent collection of the California African American Museum, Los Angeles, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally. Farrington p. 142.
