Marie Vassilieff was one of the first twentieth-century Russian artists to emigrate to Paris (in 1905) where she worked as a correspondent for several Russian newspapers and also studied with Matisse. In 1909, she founded the "Academia Vassilieff," which became a meeting place for all of the Montparnasse avant-garde, including artists such as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and Satie. She was a tireless organizer, initiating or taking part in all the Montparnasse artistic events. The AAAA Bal was a yearly charity ball to raise money for artists that became a feature on the Parisian artistic scene throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Her style, a simplified cubism that bears traces of Russian popular imagery, is perfectly represented in this rare poster.
