MARILYN MONROE
Carbon file copy of an internal memorandum advising the publicity department that Norma Jeane Dougherty's name has been changed to Marilyn Monroe. December 3, 1946.
1 page, 5 1/2x8 1/2 inches. Holes punched in the top margin.

The memo, from George Wasson to Harry Brand and two others, reads: "Please be advised that Norma Jean Dougherty's professional name has been designated as Marilyn Monroe."

Soon after signing her first contract with Twentieth Century Fox, Ben Lyon advised Norma Jeane that she needed a more commercial stage name. Lyon suggested Marilyn, after Ziegfeld Follies and Broadway musical star Marilyn Miller, and Norma Jeane added Monroe, her mother's maiden name.

the most famous name change in film history and the birth announcement of an icon.
