MARIO BORGONI (1869-1936) ATHENES PALACE HOTEL.
44 x 33 inches.
Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears at edges; tapes stains in margins; trimmed (?). Japan.
Mario Borgoni became the artistic director of Richter & Sons in 1905. The company's aggressive salesmen traveled around Europe and the Middle East convincing local hotels to use their services. The fame of Italian artists had certainly reached Greece, with Adolfo Hohenstein designing at least one image in Greek (see Swann Vintage Poster Auction #2120, lot 326). Likely referring to the present day King George II Palace Hotel, there is no doubt that this establishment would have been a luxurious destination, worthy of international attention. For this image, Borgoni depicts the Acropolis. Previously unrecorded, there is one example of a Richter luggage label for the same hotel (see Swann Travel Poster Auction #2056, lot 1).
