MARIO CARREÑO (1913-1999) COOPERATION / KEYNOTE OF THE AMERICAS. 1947. 28x18 3/8 inches. Condition A-: pinholes in corners; slight time-staining at edges; vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. A truly international artist, Mario Carreño was born in Cuba. He moved to Spain in 1931, where he was able to support himself as a graphic designer. In 1935 he moved to Mexico, where he took up with some of the great muralists working there, including Diego Rivera. From 1937-39 he lived and painted in Paris. He spent the next ten years living in New York City. And, in 1957, after a brief return to Cuba where he taught art he moved to Chile, where he received the National Arts Award in 1982. Although Pan American Day had its origins in 1890, with the establishment of the OAS (Organization of American States), it wasn't until 1931 that the event obtained its present name.
