first rabelais edition, published the same year as the original edition. While accompanying his friend and patron Jean Du Bellay on a diplomatic mission to Italy, Rabelais conceived the idea of writing a descriptive work on ancient Rome, but found that Marliani had already done so. He instead had the book reprinted at Lyon with a dedicatory letter to Du Bellay. Adams M609; Schudt 602.
