Schwichtenberg (1896-1945), after graduating from the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, began her career as a graphic designer for German baked goods company Bahlsen. She was influenced by the artistic and social ideas of Die Brücke, and opened her own studio in Berlin-Charlottenburg in the 1920s, working with artists Max Pechstein (see lots 90-108 and 490) and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (see lot 86); she also joined Werkbund and the revolutionary Novembergruppe. In 1929, she took part in the Berlin Association of Women Artists exhibition, "Die Frau von Heute" (The Woman of Today). In 1933 she emigrated to Johannesburg, South Africa, though a 1938 visit to Munich left her unable to return due to the outbreak of World War II. The last 7 years of her life were spent in seclusion and temporarily in a sanatorium in southern Germany.
