MARTHA'S VINEYARD / NEW HAVEN RAILROAD. Circa 1945.

41 3/4x28 inches.
Condition A-: repaired tears through bottom margin, affecting lettering.
At the end of WWII, the New Haven Railroad launched a campaign to attract would-be vacationers to New England. In this case, Martha's Vineyard is the intended destination, and the simple images of brightly-colored, gingerbread-style houses and small waterfront shacks do much to promote the island as an ideal family vacation spot. The railroad actually delivered passengers to Woods Hole, from whence a ferry delivered the travellers to the island itself. The enormous masthead that bisects the image is a romanticized reminder of the whaling ships which populate the island's history; lettering in brown.
