MARTIN LEWIS
R.F.D.

Oil on canvas board, circa 1933. 300x400 mm; 12x15 3/4 inches.

Lewis (1881-1962) made a popular etching of the same subject in 1933 (see McCarron 106). The location is in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, at the driveway to his friend, and fellow-artist Armin Landeck's home (the name "Landeck" is marked on the mailbox in the etching). Lewis and his wife, Lucile, lived in southeastern Connecticut during the early 1930s, temporarily leaving New York, to help reduce their cost of living during the Depression years.
