MARTIN LEWIS
The "El" Station.

Drypoint, 1919. 227x150 mm; 9x5 7/8 inches, full margins. Edition of only 5. Signed in pencil, lower right. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.

Though it was created relatively early in his career, The "El" Station is one of Lewis's most characterstic New York prints, in which he portrayed a quotidian moment in the bustling city with technical skill and precision. Lewis recorded this as his first complete drypoint without any added printmaking techniques.

Exceedingly scare; of the 5 recorded impressions, one was destroyed by Lewis on April 30, 1929, and one is in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years. McCarron 37.
