FROM THE PAAR, WARTENBURG AND GÜTTLER COLLECTIONS MARTIN SCHONGAUER
St. Martin Dividing his Cloak.

Engraving, circa 1475. 158x95 mm; 6 1/4x3 3/4 inches. Second state (of 2), after the reduction of the plate. Ex-collection Fürst Karl Paar (Lugt 2009, verso); Graf Yorck von Wartenburg (Lugt 2669, verso); Endris (?) dated 1864 in ink (see Lugt 812); Dr. Gerhart Güttler (Lugt supplement 2807b, verso); and Holtkott, ink stamp verso (not in Lugt). Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark, the shadows with additions in black ink and wash. A good impression of this extremely scarce print.

Lehrs cites only approximately 40 impressions and we locate only 6 impressions in North American public collections. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 57; Lehrs 62.
