FROM THE ARCHINTO COLLECTION MARTIN SCHONGAUER
The Flight into Egypt.

Engraving, circa 1470-75. 249x164 mm; 9 7/8x6 1/2 inches. Ex-collection Comte G. Archinto (Lugt 52, verso) and unknown collector, eagle with spread wings in a circle blue ink stamp verso (not in Lugt). Indiscernable watermark. Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark, horizontal crease visible mainly on the verso, reinforced with thin laid paper verso. A superb, dark impression of this extremely scarce, early print.

Lehrs cites approximately 60 impressions. We locate only 16 impressions in North American public collections and have found only 3 impressions at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 7; Lehrs 7.
