MARTIN SHARP (1942-2013) THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE IS TEN. 1983.
40x30 inches, 101 1/2x76 1/4 cm.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears and restoration in margins and image. Silkscreen.
Considered the foremost Australian Pop artist, Sharp also lived and worked in England in the 1960s, where he gained great recognition as the "King" of the U.K. poster scene. His rock and roll imagery includes psychedelic posters of Bob Dylan and Donovan, and an array of covers and illustrations contributed to Oz magazine. The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, is the city's most famous building and an internationally recognized landmark. To celebrate the building's 10th anniversary, Sharp mixes the seashell shapes of the building with seagulls and sail boats, blending the images into the blue of the water and the sky, all using flat colors and no outlining. The silkscreened poster is a vivid pop image.
