Additional Details

Charles Marville was a principal documentarian for the city of Paris. During the late 1850s the French government hired a group of photographers, including Hippolyte Bayard, Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, and Marville, to create a visual record of the city's ancient quarters before Haussmann implemented his urbanization project. Later appointed official photographer of Paris, Marville was also commissioned by the Musée du Louvre to photograph its art in the collection. It is possible that this photograph is one of the sculptures from the Louvre.
