Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, Chicago-based artist Mary Reed Daniel achieved her artistic training at Southern Illinois University. Rebecca Zorach writes that in 1968 Daniel was part of a growing artist's scene on Chicago 31st Street near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive - she opened the communal gallery 353 East with artists Bill Daniel, Howard Mallory and José Williams. In 1978 she received the Milliren Co. of NY Purchase Award. Daniel's paintings are in the collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, and have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
