Additional Details

'Although not generally recognized as America's first medical journal, the initial volume of the Communications preceded the Medical Repository, traditionally acknowledged as the earliest medical journal published in the United States, by seven years' (Rutkow); it was published under this title until 1913 and continued as the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, later becoming the New England Journal of Medicine.
Pages 96-98 of Volume 1 contain Thomas Kast's paper on his ligation of a femoral aneurysm, 'the first article on a surgical topic to appear in the American medical periodical literature'--Rutkow II, GSp1.
