Additional Details

After a trip Massimo Campigli made to Villa Giulia in 1928, his entire practice shifted. Abandoning the traditions of Purism and the influence of Léger and Picasso, he turned to the Etruscan art collections to inform his artworks. Drawing particularly from Etruscan architecture and pottery, his paintings began to take on a fresco-like quality, using textured paint and static compositions to illustrate idolic figures.

The present monotype is most likely a study for his 1955 oil painting La Città, which displays his conventions of plaster-like color palette and schematic composition, emphasizing the figure as group rather than individual.
