Collection of club matchbooks from California and beyond. 39 promotional matchbooks and 3 matchboxes; various conditions, some of them used.
Most or all of these matchbooks were produced as advertising for businesses with predominantly gay customers, though our research team has not yet visited all of them to verify. Most of the matchbooks are from the Los Angeles area, including Studio One (three designs), Gauntlet II, Detour, Mother Lode, The Hub, Larry's, 8709, The Blue Parrot (matchbox), The Stud Meat Rack, Rusty Nail (two designs), Boots, Gallery Inn, Revolver (matchbox), Basic Plumbing, Rawhide, The Little Shrimp, Rocks, and Probe. San Francisco-area clubs include Toad Hall, the P.S., Pendulum, S.F. Eagle, Stud, Beck's Motor Lodge, Ambush, and Moby Dick (matchbox).
From Chicago we have The Loading Zone, Glory Hole, and Gold Coast. From other locales are the Bourbon Pub in New Orleans (2 designs), The Saint in New York, Hula's Bar & Lei Stand in Honolulu, Triangle in Denver, and Governor Bradford Restaurant in Provincetown, MA. One matchbook for a phone service ("A Hot New Fantasy Every Time You Call") is included, printed in San Francisco.
