MATHEW BRADY (1822-1896)
Portrait of President Andrew Johnson. Albumen print, the image measuring 7 7/8x5 3/4 inches (20x14.6 cm.), the mount 11 1/2x9 1/2 inches (29.2x24.1 cm.), with a canceled stamp on mount verso. 1865

Starting as a maker of daguerreotype cases, Brady became the most famous photographer of his day. He opened his own studio in New York in 1844, exhibiting portraits of famous Americans. Brady's documentation of the Civil War is considered the birth of modern photojournalism. He photographed 18 of the 19 American Presidents between John Quincy Adams and William McKinley. Andrew Johnson became the 17th President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A Southern sympathizer, Johnson's tenure was marked with controversy and failure, and he became the first president to be impeached in 1868.
