inscribed and signed by matisse to walter pach on half-title. Pach, a champion of modernism, was known for organizing the 1913 Armory Show, for helping form the art collections of John Quinn and Walter Arensberg, and for his numerous writings and lectures, among other major accomplishments. Before 1910 Pach was not entirely convinced of Matisse's talents, preferring Cezanne and Van Gogh. But through his friendship with Gertrude and Leo Stein, he began to see Matisse's work in a new light. In a short time, he would help pioneer Matisse's work in America and ensure that it was acquired by the top galleries, museums, and collectors.
