first limited edition, containing the original etching. this copy inscribed and signed by matisse to elisabeth luther cary, first full-time art critic of the new york times. "avec les respectueux hommages . . . New York 22/5/33." Cary authored numerous works on artists and writers, translated several works into French, and started a monthly art periodical called the "Script." It attracted the attention of Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, such that he invited her to become the first full-time art critic for the paper in 1908, a position she held through 1941. This copy is number 478 of 1000 on Holland van Gelder, from a total edition of 1003.
