MATTACHINE BOOK SERVICE

Manhattan Gay Scene Guide, Spring 1970 edition.
Printed pamphlet, 24 pages including original illustrated wrappers. 220x140 mm; 8 1/2x5 1/2 inches, minimal wear. New York; Mattachine Book Service, Spring 1970.

A guide to "Interesting, Hysterical & Historic Places." It begins with reviews of 54 bars. The defunct Stonewall is not listed (it has long since reopened under new management), but the review of the private Cinderella club states that it "opened shortly after the Mafia-owned Stonewall Bar was closed due to thousands of young gay guys rioting in the streets with demands to get the Mafia and crooked police out of the gay bars." Other sections are devoted to the baths, clothing shops, coffee shops, "homophile organizations," hotels, "groovy movies," parks, private clubs, restaurants, and an essay on the "cruising scene."

The New York City Gay Scene Guide launched in 1967, but we have traced only two issues of the more specialized Manhattan guides: the Summer 1969 issue and this one. Only one other example of this issue has been traced (University of Connecticut).
