MATTHIAS (DATES UNKNOWN) VERLAG DER BÜCHERFREUNDE. 1920.
28 3/4x37 1/4 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; restored losses in margins.
No information at all exists about Matthias, nor is this poster reproduced anywhere (not even in the 1920 editions of Das Plakat magazine). Its dark, torturous style is characteristic of German illustration after the First World War and is reminiscent of the work of Josef Fenneker. It depicts two opened books (one of which is Goethe's Faust), which create an interior wherein a dapper man is reading. It is a clever way of suggesting an entire world of books. For "The Publisher of Friends of Books," who were purveyors of classical literary masterpieces, beautifully printed and likely beautifully bound, the poster would have been perfect.
