Working within the Kate Greenaway tradition, Maud Humphrey Bogart was one of the first successful American women freelance artists and prepared the marketplace for Jessie Willcox Smith, Grace G. Drayton and many others of the early 20th century. She was a prolific and hugely popular illustrator of picture books, greeting cards, and calendars that featured sweet little children. As the mother of actor Humphrey Bogart, she often used him as her model. He became known as "the original Maud Humphrey baby."
