Depicting the Gateway to the Tafilelt, "built of red mud and stone, this monumental gateway guarding the entrance to the huge Tafilelt oasis is typical of Saharan architecture" (Orientalist p. 48). Guiraud-Riviere was a celebrated Art Deco sculptor. His metal statuettes reflect aerodynamic speed, grace and even lithe sexuality. In 1933, he traveled to Morocco and returned with many watercolors from his trip, as well as a poster design. Orientalist p. 48.
