MAURICE LAURO (1878-1934) TROUVILLE. 1928.
47 1/4x62 3/4 inches, 120x159 1/2 cm. Devambez, Paris.
Condition B-: residual mildew staining overall; extensive replaced losses in margins, some affecting image; extensive repaired tears, creases and overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds.
An engaging Art Deco rendition of a bustling, fashionable day on Trouville's boardwalk, filled with style, beauty, glamour, color and patterns to the point that it "seems to encapsulate the essence of bright young thingery" (Hillier, p. 148). Executed in the manner of the fashionable Art Deco magazines of the era (Lauro was a magazine illustrator who specialized in fashion), this graceful, joyful and elegant celebration of the happy-go-lucky Roaring Twenties speaks to Lauro's mastery of his craft. This horizontal format of the poster is rare, and is the second copy to have appeared at auction. Trouville / Deauville p. 63 (var), Hillier p. 148, Affiches Art Deco p. 103 (var).
