Southern Pacific began operating a Mexican route in 1898, and fully owned the line from 1911. The "West Coast Route" ran south from Tucson, to Nogales, to Guyamas on the coast, past Culiacan, Mazatlan and further down towards Guadalajara, finally moving inland to Mexico City.
