MAURICE LOGAN (1886-1977)

"TREASURE ISLAND." Circa 1939.

25 1/2x42 inches, 65x106 1/2 cm. Velvetone Poster Company, San Francisco.
Condition B+ / B: losses at corners; minor tears and abrasions at edges; abrasions in image; silkscreen. Printed on thick paper, tipped to mount.

Viewed from the San Francisco Bay, where sailboats and seagulls take advantage of the clear skies and brisk winds, this poster depicts Treasure Island, site of the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition. Logan depicts the Portal of the Pacific, the entrance to the fair, which is flanked by the two impressive Elephant Towers. Within the fairground itself is the Tower of the Sun jutting right up into the sky past the confines of the image. This exceptional and rare image was produced by the Velvetone Poster Company, a San Francisco-based printing house that was among the world's pioneers of screenprinting. A sticker on the back reads, "This is a Velvetone Oil-Color Reproduction of 'Treasure Island' painted by Maurice Logan, nationally prominent San Francisco artist . . . a few additional prints of 'Treasure Island' are available through your local art dealer." This is the only known copy of the image and the poster.
