"Between 1918 and the outbreak of World War II in September of 1939, Canadian Pacific's activities achieved a truly worldwide status, through the advent of a steamship cruise service [and] the expansion of services in the Pacific" (Canadian Pacific p. 41). This painterly image juxtaposes a traditional Chinese seafaring vessel, a junk ship, with the sharp, clean lines of one of the towering three-funnel vessels in the White Empress fleet - either the Empress of Britain, Empress of Asia, Empress of Russia, Empress of Canada, Empress of Australia or the Empress of Japan. Maurice Logan was a prominent commercial artist working out of Northern California. He was also a fine artist, and in 1917 joined five other California painters to form the "Society of Six," a group of artists whose work was categorized first and foremost by bold colors. Logan designed one other poster for the Canadian Pacific, but was primarily employed by the American Railway companies. This same image was used on the cover of a brochure.
