MAURICE RÉALIER-DUMAS (1860-1928) PARIS MODE. Circa 1893. 24 3/4x17 1/4 inches. Paris-Mode, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears in image; restored loss and overpainting in lower right corner. Realier-Dumas studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He went on to enjoy a long, successful and versatile artistic career. His oeuvre included large monumental paintings inspired by impressionism as well as orientalism. Like many other French artists in the 1890s, he was also seduced by the new medium of commercial lithography, and designed a dozen posters. His strong graphic design style entails an elongated format, with women rendered in bold outline and depicted in flat colors. His women eschew the sex appeal so prevalent in other posters of the period; instead his subjects tend to exude a proud, regal manner. His talent was appreciated even during his lifetime as his poster for a gas lamp was selected to be part of the prestigious Maitre de l'Affiche series (plate 23), and he had six posters in the Reims exhibition. One of those (no. 984) is also for Paris Mode. This poster, for the same company, and in his same recognizable style, is previously undocumented.
