Original drawing of Max in Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen. First German Diogenes Kinderbuch edition of Where the Wild Things Are, Berlin, 1968. Oblong 8vo, pictorial boards, age toned, some glaze lifting from joints. Drawing with inscription measures 127x114 mm; 5x4 1/2 inches. Laid inside is an Autograph Wild Things Notecard Signed by Sendak.

inscribed and signed by sendak to wagner scholar/musicologist robert w. gutman with an ink drawing of max singing from a score of "das rheingold." Max follows Sendak's "For Robert" inscription with a voice bubble saying "With pleasure!" and a note by Sendak below adding " & thank you for the great Wagner! Maurice Sendak." The laid-in notecard, also to Gutman ("Dear Bob") expresses holiday wishes and tells him that "My good papa addressed all my Christmas cards this past week--how's that for terrific parent relationship!" Sendak, a fan of opera, contacted Gutman after the publication of his book "Richard Wagner: The Man, His Mind, and His Music," New York, 1968, and the two shared many visits discussing music and opera in the ensuing years.
