The figure lower left is a self-portrait of Beckmann (1884-1950), who during 1915 was a volunteer assistant to the medical corps of the German Army. His post at the time was Brussels, Lille, Ostende and Ghent, whence the representation of this brothel scene. Hofmaier 85.
