MAX BECKMANN
Die Prinzessin Ursula von Bärwalde im Schlossturm von König Jerum gefangen.

Drypoint, 1923. 198x150 mm; 7 7/8x6 inches, full margins. Edition of 220. Signed in pencil, lower right. Printed by Fritz Voigt, Berlin. Published by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin. From Fanferlieschen Schönefüsschen. A superb impression of this extremely scarce print.

According to Hofmaier, very few copies of this work--illustrating fairy tales by the German Romantic author Clemens Bretano (1778-1842)--are known. Presumably some were lost and destroyed in the war, Hofmaier further believes that Beckmann was unhappy with the publication in general and blocked its release.

We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 20 years. Hofmaier 293.
