MAX BECKMANN
Holzbrücke.

Drypoint on cream wove paper, 1922. 286x238 mm; 11 3/8x9 3/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 150. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Arndt Beyer, Leipzig. From Die Zweite Jahresgabe des Kreises Graphischer Künstler und Sammler. A superb, dark and richly-inked impression with strong contrasts.

According to Hofmaier, the Holzbrücke was, "A temporary wooden bridge which replaced the Alte Mainbrücke [Old Main Bridge] while being repaired." It was near the center of Frankfurt and only several blocks from Beckmann's Schweizer Strasse studio. The artist likely drew the design directly on the plate with a drypoint needle; the large sign at the bridge entrance, upper left, appears to read "Rauken [sic] Verboten" (or "Smoking Prohibited") with the letters in reverse.

The darkened figure on the bridge walkway, in the background, with the bowler hat is likely a self portrait. Hofmaier 242.
