The artist''s last printed self-portrait.

Beckmann (1884-1950) was living in the United States at the time, he had come over after World War II, having escaped Germany for Amsterdam during the war. He taught at the art schools of Washington University in St. Louis (with Werner Drewes, see lot 388) and the Brooklyn Museum. He was invited to teach at Washington University by Perry T. Rathbone, who was director of the Saint Louis Art Museum, and filled a position left vacant by the artist Philip Guston. Hofmaier 357.
