MAX SCHWARZER (1882-1955) PROWODNIK - PNEU / COLUMB. 1914.
48 3/4x35 1/4 inches, 73x89 1/2 cm. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.
Condition B+: minor restored losses in bottom corners; repaired tears, extensive creases and minor abrasions in margins and image and along horizontal fold.
Schwarzer, an illustrator and graphic designer, was a member of "Die 6," six graphic designers based in Munich including Franz Paul Glass, Fritz Huebner, Carl Moos, Walenty Zietara and Emil Preetorius. Together, "Die 6" combined forces to compete against Hohlwein's grasp on Munich's clients. Schwarzer's Art Deco style (which in many cases, such as this one, pre-dates the exhibition that gave Art Deco its name) was colorful and his designs are playful and engaging.
