MAX WEBER (1881 - 1961, RUSSIAN/AMERICAN)
Three Women.

Gouache on paper laid to card, 1910. Signed, Weber, and dated, 1910, lower right. 230x230 mm; 9x9 inches, (image). 350x330 mm; 13¾x13 inches, (mount).

Provenance: Private collection.

Max Weber created this magnificent modernist composition in 1910, just one year after his return to New York after living in Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian, Academie Colarossi, and Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Weber is one of a handful of American artists who experienced direct exposure to European modernist artists and art techniques prior to the "International Exhibition of Modern Art" held February 17 - March 15, 1913 at the 69th Regiment Armory, New York. This highly attended exhibition, organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, was most Americans' first introduction to early Twentieth Century avant-garde art.
