Thomas D. Murphy was the first person to successfully develop advertising art calendars and was responsible for proliferating the art calendar industry through his factory and power plant in Red Oak, Iowa. The firm also printed greeting cards, ink blotters, books and maps. Murphy both commissioned original paintings and acquired the rights to reproduce others for his calendars, most notably, almost 60 works by artist Thomas Moran. He also purchased the rights to use many previously-published Maxfield Parrish works, such as this winter scene.
