In addition to ejoying many successes as an artist, Maxim Bugzester was also an accomplished athelete. At seperate times he was the both the winner of the Oympic bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling and the lightweight division European boxing champion. In 1935 he left his atheletic pursuits to concentrate on more artistic ones. He enrolled in the innnovative Bauhaus School in Munich, under the tuteladge of Karl Schmitt-Rottluff. He later moved to Paris where he worked extensively with Pierre Bonnard and Georges Braque, with whom he developed a strong friendship. The two worked together for years, until Bugzester's return to New York in 1959.
