MAXIME MAUFRA
Le Village dans les Alpes.

Etching printed in dark, brownish black on cream laid paper, 1914. 315x485 mm; 12 3/8x19 1/8 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the addition of aquatint. Signed and dated "1915" in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this large, scarce etching.

Maufra (1861-1918) met Gauguin briefly in Brittany in 1890 and had repeated contact with him during the early 1890s after moving to Montmartre in Paris. The influence of Gauguin's flat and linear rhythmic style is evident in this etching, one of approximately 125 printed works by Maufra (the majority of which were printed by Delåtre in Paris in very small editions intended for distribution only to friends and close collectors). Morane 68.
