MAXWELL ASHBY ARMFIELD (1881-1972) GO TO KEW. 1915.
29x19 inches, 74x48 cm. Waterlow & Sons Ltd, London.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; restored losses in margins and corners, some slightly affecting image; minor time-staining in image.
With Britain involved in the First World War, many of the posters for the Underground "ignored the war completely and continued to encourage leisure travel" (Underground p. 34). Armfield was primarily a painter, but was also an illustrator, decorative artist, poet and author. His bold, graphic aesthetic is such that although designed around 1915, this image exudes modernity and style decades ahead of its time. This is only one of two posters the artist designed.
