MAYA. 1927.
471/2x311/2 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears and creases in margins.
Maya is a key poster among Colin's work. The poster is rare and elusive, and, it turns out, more elusive than we originally thought. Stylistically, it is the first time he utilizes the technique of partitioning an image with a black plane. Unlike some of Colin's other posters, which were issued in two sizes, Maya exists in three separate variations and formats. The largest (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #1897 lot 22), 621/2x461/4 inches, bears the imprint "Studio des Champs-Elysees" and was printed by Chachoin in 1927. This middle-size format is the version that is usually reproduced books and monographs on Colin. It only bears the name of the play but not the theatre. It was most likely intended to be used during the production's tour of the French provinces. Curiously, it is not exactly the same image as the larger format but rather a closer-up view with many small variations such as the nose, and the appearance of a bra strap. This means that in order to print this poster, a new lithographic stone was drawn.
