MAYR, JOHANN SIMON. Autograph Letter Signed, "Gio. Simone Mayr," to "Master Comploy[?]," in Italian, acknowledging receipt of the psalm by the Rev. P. Marsand, observing that the accompanying article by Cicala is written in an uneven style, and deploying an elaborate critique of the psalm: discussing composition and harmony, contrasting Mendelsohn, Bach, Beethoven, and Rossini's Figaro, citing an anecdote about Beethoven and his student, Ries, and commenting upon Marsand's religiosity and the spiritual font of religious music. 4 pages, 4to, written on a single folded sheet; remnants of prior mounting at points along center vertical fold on fourth page and at outer corners of first and fourth pages (not affecting text), faint scattered staining. Bergamo, 24 September 1838
